With some of the most interesting history San Francisco has to offer, Alcatraz Island and prison is a must-see for both tourists and locals. Alcatraz is located 1.25 miles off the San Francisco coast and was once the highest-security prison in the United States, housing famous criminals like Al Capone. Now part of the National Park Service, Alcatraz is an historic monument frozen in time, which offers a glimpse into what life was like for these criminals in the mid-1900s. The island can be accessed through Alcatraz Cruises, the official tour company of the National Park Service. Your tickets include round-trip ferry transportation to and from the island and a free audio tour of the prison. During the tour, you’ll be guided through some of the most notorious moments of history at “The Rock.” You’ll gain insight into daily life in the prison (including solitary confinement), hear about famous escape attempts and even learn about the prison’s employees and their families who lived on the island.

Racertrips Tips

  • Because of the popularity of the tours, I recommend buying your tickets well in advance.
  • The ferry ride to and from the island offer spectacular views of the San Francisco skyline. But it can be breezy and chilly. Bring a jacket (at a minimum).
