Great Falls Park in Virginia is a gorgeous, 800-acre National Park Service site located on the banks of the Potomac River. Great Falls and its sister park in Maryland are very popular among locals and tourists for its beautiful falls, cliff bluffs, rapids and narrow gorge.
Popular activities include hiking, biking and picnicking. For those interested in hiking, the park offers 15 miles of trails. (Download a trail map.) There is also an onsite Visitor Center where you can learn more about the history of this park and the Patowmack Canal, part of George Washington’s grand vision to make the Potomac River navigable as far as the Ohio River Valley. In addition to hiking, the park offers climbing, mountain biking, horseback riding trails, and guided kayaking and rafting tours down the Potomac River Gorge.
The park is open every day from 7 am until 30 minutes after sunset. The Visitor Center is open from 10 am to 4 pm daily.
