This is comedy and improv at its finest, and Second City helped to launch the careers of countless famous alumni, including Tina Fey, Gilda Radner, Jim Belushi, John Belushi, Dan Akroyd, Jane Lynch, Alan Alda, Steve Carell, Shelley Long, Bill Murray, Jordan Peele, John Candy, Tim Meadows, Joan Rivers, Amy PoehlerJulia Louis-Dreyfus and more. (Click the links on each name to see mugshots from their Second City days.) Shall I go on, or are you convinced that you can’t go wrong with Second City? They do have several shows and multiple theaters. Their shows change regularly, so I recommend going to the newest show on the Mainstage Theater. As of September 2018, that is Dream Freaks Fall from Space. The theater itself is intimate with individual chairs placed around small cocktail tables. Expect to be sitting close to the people around you. While you can order food and drinks, you don’t have to. (There is no food or beverage minimum.)

Racertrips™ Tips

  • This is probably not the best thing to do the night before the marathon. The 8 pm show runs for 2 hours plus a 10-minute intermission. That means you’re getting back to your hotel well after 10 pm. If you really want to experience Second City but don’t have another night available, consider The Best of Second City, which starts at 4 pm on Saturday and Sunday. It’s a compilation of their best sketches, songs and improvisations from the company’s 58-year history.
  • If you go to the 11 pm show, they will often do live improv after the main show for 20 or 30 minutes. This can be a treat if you really enjoy improv and are a night owl.
  • Kids must be at least 10 years old to attend and the shows are R-rated.
  • Buy tickets at least a week, if not 2 to 3 weeks in advance. The weekend shows sell out, especially the 8 pm ones.
